Easy Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80–85% lean works best)
1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1/3 cup milk
1 small onion, finely diced (about 1/2 cup)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
2 (10.5-ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 cup beef broth (or water, in a pinch)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for the gravy)
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional, for the gravy)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (for the gravy)
2 tablespoons butter or olive oil (for browning patties, optional but recommended)
Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)
